Putney Co-op Market - Putney, VT
New community market in Putney, Vermont. The Putney Co-op is one of the oldest, continually operating food co-operative markets in the country. At the time the Co-op was reaching its first fifty years of business the store was located in a small space in a hundred year old building in the center of the village of Putney. Because of the large membership and the public clientele it served, it was literally bursting at the seams. The new coop building was built on a parcel of land of the edge of the village to meet the needs of the growing market. .
The building reflects the strong desire of the co-op members for a building in the local Vermont vernacular style, yet it accommodate modern supermarket freezers, coolers, store displays, cashier stations and other components assuring efficient operations in an energy-efficient and light-filled cheerful environment. The eat in deli department has grown and is a very popular spot in the area, and the coop has been able to partner with local farmers and food producers, sourcing locally produced items along with commercial brands. It has become a true community center.
